What should I do if my puppy refuses to eat?
If your puppy normally eats his food eagerly but has suddenly stopped, the first thing you should do is make sure he is healthy. A sudden disinterest in food may mean your puppy is sick, perhaps intestinal woes. If you suspect something may be wrong, make an appointment with your puppy’s veterinarian.
What causes a puppy to not want to eat?
Teething or Pain
Just like babies become fussy about eating when they are teething, so can puppies. The discomfort and soreness they experience in their mouth can make them reluctant to eat their food, especially if it is dry food. The pain could be from an injury — after all, puppies can be quite accident-prone!
How long can a puppy go without eating?
Most healthy dogs can go up to five days without food, though that number is only true if your pet is still drinking plenty of water. Some can even go up to seven days without, though you should never let things get that far without taking your dog to the vet.
Should I be worried if my puppy doesn’t want to eat?
As long as your dog acts normal otherwise, losing enthusiasm for a meal isn’t a huge cause for concern. But any sudden loss of appetite that is out of character for your dog and lasts longer than a meal or two requires veterinary attention—sooner if your puppy acts sick.
When should I worry about my dog not eating?
If your dog is quiet, not themselves, or displaying any other symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, weakness or lethargy; or has not eaten at all for 2 days then you should seek veterinary attention.
Why is my puppy not eating and just sleeping?
The most common causes of lethargy in dogs are: Infection, including parvovirus, distemper, kennel cough and leptospirosis. Metabolic diseases, such as heart problems, liver problems, diabetes, and hypoglycaemia. Medications, such as newly prescribed drugs or a new flea or worm product.
Do puppies lose their appetite when teething?
Teething can also make puppies sick, causing a decrease in appetite, upset stomach, or unusual stools.
Is it okay if my puppy skips a meal?
It may be tempting to call the vet the second your pooch refuses dinner, but it’s perfectly natural and ordinary for some dogs to skip a meal or two on occasion. She may have simply filled up on a few too many treats that day, or she might be feeling a bit bored with her kibble.
Can puppies starve themselves?
Every dog is different
When it comes to fussy eating, remember that dogs will not normally starve themselves just because they are a bit choosy about their food (although if your dog goes 24 hours without eating anything, consult your vet). A thin appearance does not necessarily mean that anything is wrong.
