On the 1-5 scale, a score of three (where the ribs can be felt) is ideal. On the 1-9 scale, a score of 4 or 5 is ideal. The image below, courtesy of Purina, gives you an idea on what constitutes an overweight/underweight/ideal weight dog.
How do you calculate a dog’s BMI?
To calculate the dog BMI:
- Weigh your dog. If in kg, divide by 0.45 to get lbs.
- Measure its height from the shoulder. If in cm, divide by 2.54 to obtain inches.
- Divide weight by height to get the BMI.
What can cause obesity in dogs?
Dogs become overweight or obese because of a combination of causes with physical, emotional (owner-related), environmental, endocrine, or neurologic components. Musculoskeletal problems and developmental abnormalities may also greatly influence a dog’s ability to exercise and may ultimately contribute to weight gain.
How do I know my dog is overweight?
No matter your dog’s breed, you should be able to feel all of your dog’s ribs without a thick layer of fat over them. Your dog’s chest should also be wider than his abdomen, with a noticeable tuck-up from chest to stomach. An overweight dog will generally have no waist and no distinction between chest and stomach.
